A buck that escaped from the Fairchild area deer farm where chronic wasting disease was detected remains at large, and hunters should shoot it if they see it, and then notify the DNR, Hogseth said.

Deer hunting is an extremely popular activity for sportsmen and women statewide and Ohio’s white-tailed deer continue to provide hunters across the state with excellent opportunities for success as they head out into the field.

Last year, 139,000 deer were bagged by hunters in total, with the DNR projecting a rise to between 140,000 and 155,000 this year. This season will mark the second year of a management approach to rebuild deer populations based on goal setting and listening sessions that indicated a desire for more deer in many areas. The DNR said in a release that test could take several weeks to complete.

For the first time this fall deer hunters are not required to register their deer in person.

Minnesota’s firearms deer hunting season is ends (in most of the state) on November 15. Jack Butler, Warsaw, said, “It was a good opening day and it will only get better”. The firearm season has the heaviest participation rate in both states, by a significant margin. Hunters around Truman Lake also reported seeing more birds than they expected. “We hope hunters throughout the state have a safe and successful season”.

Sunday is the day and many hunters will be out trying to get that trophy buck.

Thompson dismissed Palmer’s statement, but acknowledged she and others who hunt on nearby land have complained for years about what they consider unsportsmanlike hunting practices on his property.

Small game hunters are asked to help monitor small game populations and participate in small game and grouse wing and tail surveys; a quality firearm will be raffled off to a lucky participant in each (see www.huntnh.com/newsroom/news.html?news=176). If not in a ground blind, hunters must wear at least a solid orange cap or sock hat. “Know the rules about bringing deer back in and know the facts about CWD, how it’s spread”. The youth license allows a hunter younger than 18 to shoot an antlerless deer, even in management units with “bucks only” requirements.
