Mayor Bill de Blasio said flags in the city would be at half-staff from Tuesday through Friday.
“I will always remember him as a young man of high character with a great smile”, LeCain said in a statement. “Detective Joseph Lemm did both for 15 years”.
Lemm, who was from the Bronx, was deployed three times: twice to Afghanistan and once to Iraq. In 2010, she began working as a special agent for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, a federal law enforcement arm of the Air Force that investigates felony-level crimes in the United States and overseas.
The Air Force on Tuesday identified the six people who died in a news release, listing their ages, hometowns and units. Among them was Maj.
“This was a tragic loss for our Air Force family and all our mission partners here in Afghanistan”.
Her father, Joseph Vorderbruggen, tells The Associated Press his daughter “loved life” and “loved the military”.
Condolences to his family are being published on Facebook pages. They are the second and third members of the New York Air National Guard to die in combat.
Shirley Lemm said her son, as an NYPD officer, spent weeks searching for survivors at ground zero following 9/11 and rejoined the military as a reservist so he could better provide for his family.
Staff Sgt. Louis M. Bonacasa, 31, of Coram, New York.
“I’ve never seen a man love a family the way he loved his”, Diana Bonacasa said.
The bodies of the six airmen will be received at Dover Air Force Base Wednesday in a dignified transfer ceremony.
A unit of British soldiers is now based at Camp Shorabak, though they are “fewer than 20”, according to Col Michael Lawhorn, spokesman for the global forces in Afghanistan.
In addition to those killed, two American service members and a contractor were injured during a patrol outside Bagram Air Base. He said he was not authorized to give details on foreign troop casualties.
Fighting is continuing in the southern province of Helmand to hold off the extremist group, which has taken control of a number of strategic sites, a cting defence minister Masoom Stanekzai said. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, in which a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden motorcycle into a joint NATO-Afghan patrol.
