Miss Arkansas wins preliminary talent competition in Miss America

Miss America 2017 preliminary competitions will continue September 7 and 8. Miss America officials said Shields receives a $2,000 scholarship.

The process of picking a new Miss America gets underway Tuesday night in Atlantic City.

Cierra Jackson, Miss District of Columbia, won the swimsuit competition, while Miss Tennessee, Grace Burgess, won the talent competition, singing the Eagles’ classic “Desperado”.

Barber, a Pelham High School graduate and UAB student, is representing Alabama in the 2017 Miss America Competition.

The third night of preliminary competition is tonight at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City and the finals are Sunday night with the crowning of a new Miss America.

The second night of preliminaries will start at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Boardwalk Hall.

Miss Rhode Island stood out with a Bollywood-inspired dance, where she wore a face mask.

The remaining preliminary stages will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, with the victor crowned during a televised contest in the U.S. on Sunday.

Miss Mississippi Laura Lee Lewis performed the song that helped her claim the state title, “A Piece of Sky” by Barbra Streisand.

And Miss Massachusetts Alissa Musto offered: ‘From the state that brought you bands like Boston, The Cars and Aerosmith, I’m here to rock and roll!’

Miss Michigan, Arianna Quan, spoke about immigration and helping people show pride in their heritage.
