Miss Teen USA says friends, music influenced racist tweets

Chrissy Teigen noticed something about Saturday’s Miss Teen USA contest and took to social media to call out the pageant for the lack of diversity among the top five finalists.

Although Hay seems to understand the impact of her words, former Miss Teen USA 2010 Kamie Crawford told “GMA” that there are certain things a pageant victor simply can’t do and thought that Hay should not be allowed to keep her crown.

Hay said she’s ashamed and that she was being a follower, trying to fit in with friends and influenced by the music she listened to.

The Texan beauty queen sat down with “Good Morning America’s” George Stephanopoulos when she apologized and said she has grown since she used racist slang.

“The language Karlie Hay used is unacceptable at any age and in no way reflects the values of The Miss Universe Organization”, pageant officials said in a statement, adding that Hay was “in a different place in her life” when she posted the tweets.

Be Civil – It’s OK to have a difference in opinion but there’s no need to be a jerk. “Through hard work, education and thanks in large part to the sisterhood that I have come to know through pageants, I am proud to say that I am today a better person”. “It’s embarrassing”, she said, according to E! The NAACP’s Houston branch also issued a statement concerning the controversy surrounding Hay: Since our founding over 107 years ago, the NAACP has remained steadfast in our mission to eliminate racial prejudice wherever it exists in our society.

“I’ve gone through my own personal struggles, and everyone has their own personal struggles, but that doesn’t give you an excuse to use this type of language or to use any bad language at all”, she said. So, it was kind of a careless mistake. “Karlie learned many lessons through those personal struggles that reshaped her life and values”. “We as an organization are committed to supporting her continued growth”. Hay did not return any of Eyewitness News’ requests for comment, but she posted a series of tweets in which she admitted using language she is “not proud of” and that “there is no excuse for”. “It goes to show that it can come back and hurt you”. And hopefully people learn from my mistakes, because it is a big mistake.
