Miss Tennessee, DC big winners in first night of Miss America competition

Miss District of Columbia, Cierra Jackson, and Miss Tennessee, Grace Burgess, were the winners on the first night of the preliminaries.

The process of picking a new Miss America gets underway Tuesday night in Atlantic City.

“Miss America contestants continue to be the best and brightest in the country, and we proudly support each and every young woman who competes in our national program”, he said.

“I’m just so glad it’s something that we’ve kept going as a tradition for the Miss America Organization”, Miss America Betty Cantrell said of the parade during a press conference. Miss Nebraska Aleah Peters was the lone outlier and twirled a baton for the audience at Boardwalk Hall.

It includes contestants from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Cierra won in the swimsuit section, while Grace bagged the top spot in the talent section after she wowed the judges with her version of the Eagles’ classic Desperado.
