Missing key components, Orioles sputter in 7-1 loss to Yanks

Alex Rodriguez hit his 696th career homer, Ivan Nova grinded through six innings and the Yankees’ bullpen trio closed up shop for the second straight game to help NY beat the Baltimore Orioles 2-1 on Monday night. Chase Headley belted a two-run shot in the eighth.

The Yankees bullpen has been almost unhittable this series, tossing 9 2/3 scoreless innings over the first three games of the four-game series at Yankee Stadium.

Entering this week, the New York Yankees faced an uphill battle that would ultimately decide their destiny.

Eovaldi (8-6) won for the first time since May 29.

New York Yankees’ Starlin Castro follows through on a two run home run during the second inning … With Nolan Reimold at first with one out, Ryan Flaherty’s single reached foul ground just past third base, but Reimold was easily caught off second base, and that helped truncate the inning.

Joey Rickard’s RBI double scored Flaherty for the Orioles’ only run. After Alex Rodriguez struck out, Didi Gregorius singled.

Worley (2-1) made his first start since April 15 following 18 consecutive relief appearances.

Eovaldi surrendered just one run over 5 ¹/₃ innings and 82 pitches, but without assists from Anthony Swarzak and Rob Refsnyder, Eovaldi’s outing could have been a whole lot worse.

Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis (stomach virus) missed his second straight game and catcher Matt Wieters (sore right foot) also was out.

Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira was out of the starting lineup for the third straight game because of a sore left foot. Kris Bryant then hit into a 5-4-3 double play to give Familia his 33rd save in 33 chances. Despite taking two out of three from the Rays over the weekend, the team only scored a total of eight runs in that three-game series.

Hansel Robles (4-3) pitched two scoreless innings in relief for the win.

Noah Syndergaard of the Mets also returned to dominant form in a no decision. They have hit the under in five of their last seven meetings. He struck out eight before being replaced by Jerry Blevins after throwing 105 pitches.

After escaping that jam, the Yankees extended their lead.

New York’s Michael Conforto made his first start, in right field, since being recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday and went 0 for 3. Harrison chugged to third then popped up and strolled home when the relay throw from second baseman Scooter Gennett went by Perez.

No Runs DMC, possibly in its final days with Miller and Chapman rumored to be on the trade block, covered the final three innings to extend its scoreless streak to 22 innings.

With one out, Perez sent a liner toward the mound that drilled Taillon on the back of the head. He was hit by a pitch in the first inning but stayed in the game. Carlos Beltran has 95 hits to his credit with 45 runs, 19 homers and 58 RBI.

RED SOX 4, GIANTS 0 David Ortiz hit a three-run home run and Rick Porcello remained unbeaten at home as Boston beat struggling San Francisco.

The Orioles are struggling on offence and will need Mark Trumbo, who leads the Major League Baseball in home runs to get back on the bat.

Scoring only nine runs in four games is simply not going to lead to many wins. Brian McCann flew to center, and that brought Gardner home.

Over the series, the Yankees bullpen has allowed just one hit while recording 10 strikeouts and issuing two walks. The Tigers had only one hit before the ninth.

BLUE JAYS 5, DIAMONDBACKS 1 Edwin Encarnacion hit his 25th home run, Aaron Sanchez pitched seven strong innings and visiting Toronto beat Arizona. The drought ended when he drove a 2-0 fastball from Kevin Gausman (1-7) into the left-field seats to open the second inning.
