Those runs? Gained 56 yards. The run defense has to get itself together in a hurry against Mississippi State.

The Auburn Tigers take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs today in a game on the 2015 college football schedule which sees both teams entering with a 2-1 record on the season and one of them coming off one of their worst losses in some time.

After talking up the SEC’s schedule compared to that of Ohio State and the Big Ten, Bret Bielema’s ranked squad lost first to Toledo and Texas Tech, and Bielema himself engaged – not for the first time, it has to be said – in a verbal sparring contest, this time with Tech’s Ryan Gosling-lookalike coach Kliff Kingsbury. He benched safety Rudy Ford along with linebackers Casanova McKinzy and Kris Frost after saying the unit had been suffering from communication issues all season.

From there, it was mostly Mississippi State’s game to lose. Say what you want about Auburn’s defense having questions, they still have talent and they still play physically.

In the second half, Auburn’s defense forced a turnover and four punts but the offense was unable to capitalize.

As you probably know, the bulk of that yardage – 228, to be exact – and three touchdowns came from star back Leonard Fournette, who Auburn defenders had previously said would be easy to tackle. There are a lot of guys, and a fifth-year senior quarterback that has clearly progressed in terms of his ability to go through his reads and find his check downs instead of just taking off running. We have to bring it every single snap. He completed 29 of 41 attempts for 270 and the only two touchdowns in the game. Instead, Prescott connected with eight different receivers during the game to drive the State offense. Auburn will be without one of its best players indefinitely. The Bulldogs are allowing only 20.9 percent conversions (9-of-43).

Mississippi State isn’t in as dire straights as Auburn, but the Bulldogs haven’t been able to replicate the early-season success they had in 2014. The match was so close that the second and third needed extra points to decide a victor, the most for the team in a match this season. He did that four times in his previous 36 games.
