Johnson has struggled greatly throwing the ball, completing 59 percent of his passes and throwing six interceptions through three games this season.

Auburn is making a change at quarterback for this week, Tigers’ coach Gus Malzahn announced today.

Jeremy Johnson is out, Sean White is in. Very well in scrimmages and just feel like he needs a shot right now. We’re hopeful that we’ll get him back before the season’s out. “He’s got that little air of confidence that quarterbacks have”. “He is a talented young guy and we are excited to see what he can do”.

“Sean is a guy that we have felt good about for a long time”, Malzahn said. “We are looking forward to watching him play”. White is a redshirt freshman from Boca Raton, FL. “And he’ll be ready if he’s called upon”.

For Johnson, Malzahn’s decision allows the junior to rediscover the comfort level he showed as a successful sophomore backup to Nick Marshall previous year, without the weekly pressure of keeping Auburn alive in a highly competitive SEC West race.

I think Byron Cowart has done a pretty good job of preparation and things like that, he’s got some significant playing time, so we’ll see what he does”, Countess said.

“He’s going to be out for an extended period of time”, Malzahn said.

“It would be probably hard for a normal kid to react with poise and composure when you take into account how much football means to the people at Auburn and how it is covered in the state of Alabama“, Ken Mastrole, White’s private summer quarterback coach in Florida said. “You have to do what you feel is best for your team and your offense each week”.

“Sean has an extremely high IQ and he’s very confident in his skills”, Harriott said. “He’s a competitor, but he’s a team guy, too”.

The courageous face Auburn quarterback Jeremy Johnson put on for reporters Saturday after a 45-21 loss to Baton Rouge was masking a few doubts. Defensive coordinator Manny Diaz held the Tigers to their second-lowest rushing total (190) while limiting them to no runs of 20-plus yards, the first and only time for the Newton-led offense.

Since the first SEC Championship Game in 1992, only one team has started 0-2 in conference play and gone on to win the SEC: LSU in 2001.

Malzahn would only commit to White being the start for the Mississippi State game.
