Missouri man due in court over threat to shoot black people

Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla confirmed that 19-year-old Hunter M. Park is a student there.

Police said earlier the suspect was not on or near the university’s Columbia campus when the threat was made.

Three 19-year-old Missouri men have been charged with making terrorist threats on social media about shooting people at college campuses in the state, and two of them talked about targeting black people.

Concerned Student 1950, one of the primary organizations behind the campus protests, tweeted its approval following the announcement.

“If Yik Yak is used for good, a lot can come from it”.

It’s not hard to see the appeal of Yik Yak – users are able to say what they want anonymously. Tensions were high on the Mizzou campus after students protested against the administration for its handling of several racist incidents, leading to the resignation of the university system’s president after a hunger strike by a graduate student and a boycott by black members of the football team.

“We’re at an opportune moment to take a few giant steps forward to move this issue far beyond where it has been in the past”, he said. If we cancel the exam, they win; if we go through with it, they lose.

Protesters at the University of Missouri won another victory Thursday, when the school’s Board of Curators announced the candidate they handpicked as the university’s new interim president. Howard President Wayne Frederick said his school was working with law enforcement and had increased campus security.

Wednesday night, MU Policy Now, a graduate professional student activist group, submitted a formal letter to the Board of Curators advocating for Middleton.

University of Missouri police are investigating a report of vandalism at the Columbia campus’ black culture center. Established in 1972 at the behest of the Legion of Black Collegians, the center was renamed in 2000 to honor civil rights pioneers Lloyd Gaines and Mary O’Fallon Oldham.

Middleton earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri in 1968 and went on to earn his law degree from the MU Law School in 1971.

A former trial attorney who worked in the U.S. Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, and who also worked for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Department of Education, Middleton joined the university’s law faculty in 1985. Chancellor Middleton as Interim President; however we are still pushing for shared governance.

In that role, he was credited with turning women’s studies and black studies programs into their own departments.

Park will appear in the Boone County Circuit Court for his arraignment at 1:30 p.m.

Declaring the patch of University of Missouri campus where protestors were camping a “no-media safe space”, race protestors bullied a student photographer this week, sparking outrage in the news media and elsewhere.

Another threat said: “Some of you are alright”. One professor encouraged students to come to class for an exam on Wednesday, because staying home would allow the “bullies” to win-aka the people posting threats against black students on Yik Yak.

Tyler Bradenberg, 19, allegedly posted, “I’m gonna shoot up this school”, on an anonymous messaging app Wednesday. S&T is part of the University of Missouri System and Rolla is about 95 miles (153 km) south of Columbia.
