The two child endangerment charges against Brittany Mugrauer, the boys’ mother, are unfounded, said Dale, the shop’s operator and an acquaintance of Mugrauer.

Her two children, aged four and six, were found in a cave on the eastern edge of Kansas City where they were living in an 8-by-10-foot wooden shipping crate among dismantled vehicles.

The children have since been taken to a hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, USA where they have been bathed and given clean clothes.

Their mother admitted she had left the children alone in the caves for several days, though the cause for this is as yet unknown.

A Jackson County Sheriff’s Office spokesman did not comment on Dale’s assertions.

Saturday evening, security officers and workers entering the caves told us police continue to have the area blocked off as the investigation continues.

“I love my boys to death, like, I live and breathe just for them”, Mugrauer said.

Wayne says his daughter lost a child to SIDS in February and he moved her and the boys from Florida to Kansas City to help her get back on her feet emotionally. She said, ‘Hey, the boys are asleep.

Security officers wouldn’t let us inside the caves to see where authorities found the children, but a man who stores his vehicle here says he knows this cave, and he can’t believe someone would leave children there.

The 6-year-old said he should be in first grade, but said he didn’t go to school.

“It’s just absolutely ridiculous that these kids have been here for days with no food and no water in a dungeonous environment”.

“My two mechanics were here the entire time”, Dale said Monday.

“There’s no doors. There’s no hinges”.

He says Mugrauer came there from out of state to work for him, and because she had no babysitter, she brought her two young sons with her. Investigators said they were alone – the 4-year-old eating with his fingers from a dry, dirty cup of ramen noodles. “There’s no restrictions. There was no, ‘You guys can’t come out of there.’ They’re free to go in and out of it as they please”.

“No. This is the not the best place”, said the man, who asked not to be identified.
