Missouri protests embolden student leaders on other campuses

Chuck Henson, who was appointed Tuesday as interim vice chancellor for inclusion, diversity and equity, became choked up Thursday during a teleconference with reporters as he described his experiences so far. Later that night, a video was taken of Wolfe trying (and failing) to define “systematic oppression;” in the video, he says, “Systematic oppression is because you don’t believe that you have the equal opportunity or success in this world”.

Meanwhile, the board also said it would accelerate the transition of authority at the main campus, with Interim Chancellor Hank Foley taking over from R. Bowen Loftin effective immediately. The student government president, who is black, said in September that riders in a pickup truck taunted him with racial slurs. Many students, faculty and staff accused administrators of failing to adequately address the problems.

Loftin also announced Monday he would be stepping down at the end of the year for a different role at the school.

Prosecutors have charged a third Missouri man with posting online threats to attack a college campus.

Prosecutors also charged another 19-year-old, Tyler Bradenberg of St. Louis, with a felony count of making a terrorist threat.

Police have issued a $1,500 reward for any information leading to an arrest.

“It is clear to me the first step is to devote attention to addressing those demands”, Middleton said at his introductory news conference. It was apparently aimed at the Missouri University of Science & Technology in Rolla, where he studied chemical engineering for a semester last fall.

The threats follow protests over the University of Missouri’s handling of racial issues that helped force two top officials to resign. Shaw ordered Park to remain jailed, pending a November 18 court appearance.

A handful of student groups-including the Graduate Professional Council, which represents graduate-student employees-lobbied for Mr. Middleton’s appointment throughout the week. “Mike’s outstanding managerial skills and knowledge of the UM System and its four campuses, make him the leader we need to advance our university system forward”. That threat vanished Monday when Wolfe resigned.

At the Homecoming Parade in October, members of the Legion of Black Collegians confronted University president Tim Wolfe who was riding in a sports vehicle, by interlocking their arms and attempting to form a blockade; the police forcefully broke up the protesters, who are now known as Concerned Student 1950.

Middleton, who is black, retired as deputy chancellor of the Columbia campus in August and took on the role of deputy chancellor emeritus.

A second student was arrested at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville for allegedly posting a threat on Yik Yak that read, “I’m gonna shoot any black people tomorrow, so be ready”.

Authorities say Brandenberg posted “I’m gonna shoot up this school” on Yik Yak on Wednesday. “These threats are reprehensible”, the school’s leadership said Wednesday.

Jay Nixon named Yvonne Sparks to fill a vacant seat on the University of Missouri Board of Curators. Data provided by the Missouri Department of Higher Education shows that four public universities in the state have higher percentages of black students.

His appointment was announced after a tumultuous day that saw someone just after midnight vandalized a sign outside the school’s black culture center. They were reviewing video surveillance from the area, a school spokesman said. “We are receiving assistance from the Missouri State Highway Patrol and will continue to have an increased security presence on campus for the foreseeable future”.

Frustration and anger that had built for months over racial incidents at the University of Missouri resulted in the resignations Monday of its president and its chancellor.

“Really it just comes down to holding these people accountable”, said Shelbey Parnell, an organizer of Concerned Student 1950, the group that issued the demands.

The threats showed up Tuesday on the anonymous location-based messaging app Yik Yak and other social media. “Don’t go to campus tomorrow”, Park “smiled and stated, ‘I was quoting something, ‘” Heckmaster wrote. His arraignment in Boone County court was set for 1:30 p.m. Thursday and he was being held without bond.

Reports of racially charged threats have permeated social media.

All white students, referred to as “allies”, were asked to leave the meeting so that there could be a “black only” healing space.
