Missouri Senate candidate assembles gun blindfolded in TV ad

Mr. Kander, who is challenging Republican Roy Blunt for his Missouri Senate seat, talks about his service in the USA military and the importance of respecting firearms while he assembles the rifle in under 30 seconds. Kander, Missouri’s secretary of state, was an Army intelligence officer in Afghanistan.

Gun control and the Second Amendment have moved center stage in Missouri’s U.S. Senate race pitting Republican Sen.

He notes his support of Second Amendment rights during his time in the state legislature, along with his belief in background checks “so terrorists can’t get their hands on one of these”.

“I approved this message”, Jason Kander says, pausing briefly to rack the slide, figuratively placing a round in the chamber, “’cause I’d like to see Sen.

Saint Louis University political scientist Ken Warren says the ad helps Kander because it shows he knows his way around guns, and it plays up his military background. “In Afghanistan, I volunteered to be an extra gun in a convoy of unarmored SUVs”.

But while the NRA may be zeroing in on Kander, he’s also gotten support from gun control advocates. The noir-infused ad begins with an intruder breaking into a home and argues, “You have a right to protect your home with a firearm [.] Jason Kander refused to defend your Second Amendment Rights in Jefferson City”. The bill passed the House but was never called for a vote in the Senate.

End Citizens United PAC, a group dedicated to limiting the use of outside money in politics, launched an ad at the same time as Kander to contrast the different types of service of the two candidates. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) for his seat, appears in an ad blindfolded and standing at a wooden table in a darkly lit warehouse.

Republican primary candidate Catherine Hanaway featured a shotgun in one of her ads.
