Mixture of Mountain Dew, racing fuel blamed in teens’ deaths

Officials have said that a 16-year-old is dead after consuming a mixture of racing fuel and Mountain Dew.

Two other boys who drank the mixture at a party last week were hospitalized, treated and released, said Dr. Donna Seger, executive director of the Tennessee Poison Center.

A vigil for Stephenson will be held at the high school on Tuesday night.

The Robertson County Sheriff’s Office and Greenbrier Police are jointly investigating the incident due to the locations that both boys were discovered.

Dr Seger says drinking DewShine can make one intoxicated, just like alcohol, but that it can have far more damning effects ranging from nausea to coma and then death. “If it hadn’t been for the deaths, we probably wouldn’t have noticed”, she said.

Seger said this is the first time she has heard of the mixture, known as “Dew Shine”.

Police are awaiting medical examiner reports to understand the exact cause of death.

Four cases of teens drinking the so-called “Dewshine” in Robertson County, Tenn., have been recorded with the Tennessee Poison Center, authorities said.

“You will not be in trouble with law enforcement if you were present at this gathering”, police said. ‘Our goal is to ensure the safety of our citizens and get medical help for those who may need it’.

In addition to his parents, Logan is survived by his stepmother, Mickie Stephenson; stepfather, Kevin Daniel; grandparents, Wayne A. (Shirley) Stephenson, Sr., John (Sharon) Shane; brothers, Luke Daniel, Trevor Boles; sisters, McKenzie Stephenson, Lindsey Mays, Riley Daniel and Audrey Boles, his obituary said.

A friend of Logan’s family has created a GoFundMe account from which donations will be given to the Greenbrier High School’s alcohol and drug education program. We have to try to make sure that adolescents are aware of the toxicity.
