Well, according to Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, a new Mario game could be in the works for the NX and it could be arriving within the next two years.

We all love Mario, and the plumber’s absence at E3 2016 felt especially strong considering the amount of attention that Nintendo was getting. The company made a decision to stick to two flagship games, rather than reveal its upcoming NX console and hint at that machine’s launch lineup.

Miyamoto does, however, express that they face bigger challenges in changing up the Mario franchise compared to Zelda, due to its wider reaching audience. He added that new Nintendo recruits have allowed the team to look “at the conventions with fresh eyes”. Miyamoto is fully aware of Mario’s universal appeal, and has tried to reassure fans by saying he plans to proceed with caution.

Miyamoto also spoke about the difficulties of making a new Mario game, “It’s kind of hard with Mario because some of the more important conventions of Mario are based on the approachability and accessibility of those games”.
