“If he’s going to be a starter he has to answer that question”, Green said. “He was good – flipping the curveball wherever he wants to”.

Ramirez widened the Red Sox lead to 6-2 when he opened the eighth inning by hitting his 21st homer on the first major league pitch thrown by Padres’ right-hander Jake Smith. Manager John Farrell said there’s no timetable for Wright’s return. Cosart faced Boston in his rookie season with Houston and yielded two runs with five walks over five innings in a no-decision August 7, 2013.WALK-OFFS1. He struck out three and walked three in dropping his third straight start. He was lifted from the game after loading the bases with nobody out in the fourth.

Buchholz might well have finished the inning with just 87 pitches on his arm, but likely the Red Sox were aiming to take it easy on him after the brief transition back to the bullpen, and perhaps had a reasonably tight pitch count on his arm. “I was having trouble locating my pitches and he took advantage of one”.

“It definitely wasn’t one of my best days”, he said. “I feel like I’m right there, about to turn the corner and get into the fifth, sixth and seventh innings”.

Jackson (4-5) struck out 11 in seven scoreless innings.

Jackson (4-5) gave up four hits and ended his three-start losing streak. In the second, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Chris Young had set up Yoan Moncada with two runners in scoring position and one out, needing just a productive out to score the opening run of the game.

Boston’s win, coupled with Toronto’s loss at NY, leaves the Red Sox and Blue Jays tied with 77-61 records as they prepare to meet in a three-game series this weekend in Toronto. Young’s pinch hit solo homer in the eighth gave the Red Sox some life, but the Sox blew a chance to tie or go ahead when Aaron Hill followed with a double but was left stranded at third base after a ground out, and strike-outs by Sandy Leon and Xander Bogaerts. Boston, which completed interleague play with a 14-6 record, will play only AL East teams in the final 23 games.

“We got a couple of opportunities with really good hitters at the plate”, Farrell said.

Red Sox: RHP Steve Wright (bursitis right shoulder) remains out and Farrell said he doesn’t know an end date to the injury.

Padres: Activated Jay (fractured right forearm) from the 60-day DL. Jay missed 66 games. After starting their three game series against the Boston Red Sox with a win, the Friars were hoping to make it two in a row at Petco Park Tuesday night.
