MLB Score: Marlins 6, Mets 4

An MRI taken Friday came back negative, and deGrom will start throwing again once his discomfort subsides, the Mets said in a press release. He’s given up just three runs in 22 innings in his last three starts, with opponents collecting just seven hits in 68 at-bats (.103).

Given three days of extra rest after a pair of woeful starts, deGrom continued to struggle Thursday when he was reinserted into the rotation. Salas was 3-6 with a 4.47 ERA with the Angels but has four saves and a 2.93 ERA since the All-Star Game.

There were four of them, four young starting pitchers, and last October they carried the New York Mets into the World Series. “I can’t throw the ball where I want right now”, deGrom said. Not just deGrom, but for Mets manager Terry Collins too. That’s just not Jake. As he left the dugout after five innings in a loss to Miami, he waved for the team trainer to join him.

After playing in a franchise-record 23 straight games that were decided by three runs or less, the Marlins were finally involved in one that wasn’t considered close, one way or the other.

Cabrera connected on a two-run, pinch-hit homer in the ninth to make things interesting late but Fernando Rodney was able to shut the door as the Marlins snapped a five-game losing streak.

The Mets will use Wilmer Flores and Kelly Johnson at second base.

The Marlins caught a break when 42-year old Ichiro Suzuki leaped above the center-field wall to take a potential two-run homer away from Curtis Granderson in the fifth.

Yelich hit his 18th homer in the seventh. Slugger Yoenis Cespedes, shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera and several of the club’s young pitchers also have missed time. With Matt Harvey getting season ending surgery, Zack Wheeler experiencing setbacks in his rehab assignment this year, Noah Syndergaard pitching through bone spurs, and Steven Matz having recent shoulder issues, deGrom has probably been the most reliable Mets starter up to this point this season. I’m falling off so hard to the first base side, if you look back at film from previous year I feel like I could throw the ball and nearly stand there on my land leg.

NY had plenty of opportunities against starter Jake Esch, who was making his major league debut. Miami began August four games out of first place in the National League East and one game up in the race for the second wild card spot but finished it 11 games behind the Washington Nationals in the division and 3 1/2 games behind the second wild card, the St. Louis Cardinals.
