Dr Martin Luther King was an American Baptist minister, activist and leader in the African-American Civil Rights movement. Day has become recognized as a day of service across the country, since first observed as national holiday in 1986. No paper will be published or delivered that day.

Tuolumne and Calaveras counties schools and offices will be closed. According to Go Banking Rates there are at least 27 major banks that will not be open on Monday including Chase, CitiBank, Sovereign, Santander, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America.
The office of the Journal-Advocate will be closed Monday, Jan. 18, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Many are also offering big sales in honor of the holiday. The Long Island Railroad will operate on a Holiday schedule, and Metro-North Railroad will operate on a Saturday schedule.
County offices: Calaveras and Tuolumne County offices will be closed. There also will not be any outgoing mail picked up at the post office on Monday.
Malls and supermarkets will be open. LA’s Kingdom Day parade may be the largest parade in the country in honor of Dr. King.
