But domestically and internationally, having a showpiece final to capture the imagination, ideally with some name recognition sprinkled throughout the teams in the form of storied designated players, is an ideal for MLS.

Soccer-specific stadiums have enhanced the game experience for fans, helping push attendance to new highs.

Pat Murphy: Yeah it should be a good one.

Both teams can score, which is no surprise given the attacking talent.

Once notable players like him faded, however, the media came off their high on entertainment soccer and chose not to fund or broadcast NASL. So it’s fun to watch.

That game has obviously come up a lot this week in interviews with the players and the staff. Head coach Gregg Berhalter has given a lot of credit to Portland for playing a good game and taking advantage of opportunities in that match.

I am conflicted. On one hand I am disappointed that the Whitecaps were eliminated while on the other, I am happy to see a Cascadia team (not named Seattle) with a chance to win the Cup. The sight of small-market, model MLS citizens visibly succeeding may be the best indicator of the health of the league, but in terms of moving the ratings needle, there’s no doubt that more than a few marketing folk were hoping not to travel too far from NY or LA that year – just as they were hoping to still be in NY this weekend. Trapp, who learned this role under Caleb Porter in college, is a big part of slowing down the opposition’s attack and his return helped to solidify things once he was back to full fitness. I don’t know really what happened. Due to injury, he played only one year for the Timbers, but lead the team into the NASL semifinals in 1981.

PM: Yeah he was fantastic they added him for this season and. You know he’s a guy that they can, a tall athletic guy, that they can put balls.

“I’d definitely love to go back home and play, and still be able contribute to something”, said Ridgewell, who made more than 250 Premier League appearances during spells with Midlands trio Villa, Birmingham City and West Brom, respectively, between 2003 and 2014. “It’s going to be a chess match, a battle but what more would you want in a MLS final?”
