Although Windows 10 is already on over 350 million devices (that’s installed, but not all in use), the operating system’s growth is likely to drop off significantly once it stops being free at the end of the month.

Microsoft is crawling to have 1Bn Windows10 users by 2018.

The adoption of earlier versions of the software has been out spaced by the Windows 10 uptake.

Relying on her device to run her travel agency in Sausalito, California, Goldstein went to the Microsoft’s support team seeking answers, The Seattle Times reports.

Yet after laying off most of the staff from its 2014 acquisition of Nokia, and taking two separate restructuring charges from the $9.4 billion acquisition, Microsoft now has a smartphone business that’s much smaller than it was when it made its initial Windows 10 device calculation. Analysts say that’s an impressive rate of adoption for software released a year ago. Windows Phone was also meant to make up a fair chunk of the install base, but with the division’s revenues in freefall and Windows 10 so far having done little to stem its decline, Microsoft is now waking up to the fact that Windows Phone can not be relied upon to significantly boost the OS’s adoption.

The Surface Book 2 is expected to come out next year, alongside the Surface Phone, both of which would be coming out in the March of 2017.

Expiring on July 29 2016, Windows 10 is available fee-free to anyone with Windows 7 or 8.1 and promises a series of new tools to enhance users’ productivity. Companies traditionally wait a couple of years before upgrading Windows. This fuels speculations that the cost could further slowdown the amount of users switching to Windows 10. The system was released in July 2015. Things may slow down even more over the next year as Windows 10 will no longer be a free upgrade on the desktop from next month onward.
