“Mockingjay – Part 2” Edges “Krampus”, Wins Third Straight Weekend Box Office

It was able to $18.6 million for first place, but it is nearly guaranteed to be the lowest grossing movie in the franchise. If estimates hold it will be the largest second weekend drop for a Pixar film ever, on the wrong side of the 60.3% drop Cars 2 had back in 2011.

Unfortunately, once all is said and done, Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur may go down as one of the studio’s rare missteps. Good Dinosaur, The – Disney – US$34.9 million 3.

“Spectre” brought in $5.4 million over the weekend, officially getting to a domestic total of $184.5 million. But there are no other horror movies in theaters and the only other Christmas movie is THE NIGHT BEFORE in its third week, so maybe by combining the genres, KRAMPUS was able to appeal to two different audiences. Add another $4 million in inflation-adjusted earnings, and the 2006 film scored just $25 million in its entire run. That may be so although the Bond film plunged by 52 per cent to $5.4 million, scoring $20.6 million so far. The Peter Sohn-directed film crossed the $100 million mark globally (its worldwide total is $131.4 million).

Sure-to-be Oscar contenders Spotlight and Brookyln take places No. 8 and No. 9 with $2.9 million and $2.4 million, respectively. “Krampus, ” $16.0 million ($3.3 million international).3. It’s unclear how wide Chi-Raq will ultimately play, since many theaters will likely refuse to carry the title since it will be offered relatively quickly on Amazon Prime (an official release date has not been set).

In a failed bid for the faith-based crowd, Freestyle Releasing offered up “The Letters”, a look at the life of Mother Teresa, in 886 theaters, where it grossed an uninspiring $802,000. Chicago audiences were particularly receptive to the film’s message, handing the picture a $15,000-plus per-screen average on 22 screens. It earned $US1.2 million over 305 screens and is being distributed by Roadside Attractions. Fox Searchlight debuted Youth at four locations to $80k, and the Weinstein Company dropped the latest adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth (starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard) at five locations where it made $67,868. – US$16.9 million 7.
