The coroner and the Modesto Police are investigating the boy’s death, Sheriff’s Sgt. Their bodies were found at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday after police received a call asking for a “security check” of the home.

Officers were able to determine Martinez was traveling in another vehicle, which was found unoccupied in the parking lot of the Westfield Oakridge shopping mall at 925 Blossom Hill Road around 12:45 a.m. Sunday, Morales said.

Alisha Pratt, a former trainee and colleague of the slain Crews, told the Modesto Bee she met the physician a few years ago. Martinez had previously been in a relationship with Crews, and they are the biological parents of the 6-month-old victim.

The remaining victims, while not yet publicly identified, are believed to have been relatives, according to Modesto police. The infant was identified as the child of Crews and the suspect. Graves said counselors and chaplains are available for the officers who first entered the home and made the grisly discovery. San Jose police got a tip he was in the area visiting family. Investigators had named Martinez as a “person of interest” in the case Saturday and said he was last seen driving a red Lincoln Navigator.

Martinez is still in San Jose awaiting a transfer to Modesto. Officers arrested him without incident, Morales said. In the meantime, flowers and candles are being placed outside the victim’s home.
