Modi calls on Vietnamese President

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that his visit to Vietnam is a reinforcement of friendship, solidarity and comprehensive cooperation of both the countries.

India and Vietnam share borders and large trade volumes with China.

India believes that states should resolve disputes through peaceful means without threat or use of force and exercise self-restraint in the conduct of activities that could complicate or escalate disputes affecting peace and stability.

Trong agreed that India-Vietnam relations were time tested and very durable.

An Indian Prime Minister is visiting Vietnam after a gap of 15 years. India is keen to sell the missile to Vietnam and four other countries, according to a government note seen by Reuters in June. “If connectivity is there between the two countries, the language barrier is broken a bit and the cultural barriers are shaken up, and there is great opportunity”, he said. Vietnam is the ASEAN Coordinator for India for 2015-18 and both countries are committed to strengthening our partnership within the India-ASEAN and Mekong-Ganga Cooperation frameworks.

Modi was then accorded a ceremonial welcome with a guard of honour at the Presidential Palace in Hanoi. “Our partnership will strengthen peace, development and security in the region”, President Quang told Modi.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered Vietnam a credit line on Saturday of half a billion dollars for defense cooperation.

“Vietnam is playing that game: ‘Come on, China, get close to us, cooperate, but if you don’t we can move to India or we’ll go talk to you after the Prime Minister of India has just been through, ‘” he said.

Vietnam had earlier Strategic Partnership only with Russian Federation and China. “The Prime Minister’s visit will further strengthen areas like agriculture, defence and power, where there can be possibilities of increasing the business”. Together, this would add more credibility to its Act East Policy and position India as a “benign power of considerable strength” in the region.

The Indian side expressed its commitment to capacity building and training to enable Vietnam’s participation in United Nations peacekeeping operations, it said.

Modi is likely to hold bilaterals with several G20 leaders during his 48-hour stay here. President thanked him for the invitation.
