On his way back to New Delhi from Kabul, Modi made a sudden stopover in Lahore where he met his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif and pledged to pursue the peace process.

“The previously unannounced visit is a potential sign of thawing relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbors”, the Associated Press wrote. However, there can be absolutely no doubt that vast majority of well-meaning citizens in India and Pakistan that applaud Narendra Modi for his bold initiative, which certainly can be called as extraordinary considering the hostile relationship and border skirmishes between both the countries for last several decades.
Prior to Modi’s visit, India has delivered three Mi 25 attack helicopters to Afghanistan, in what is seen as a shift in its strategy towards the strife-torn country. The visit coincides with Sharif’s birthday and the wedding of his granddaughter.
On reaching Sharif’s ancestral residence at Raiwind known as Jati Umrah, PM Modi’s favourite dish “Saag” was among other vegetarian delicacies prepared for him during a lunch-cum-dinner.
Pakistan Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry, the top foreign ministry bureaucrat, later told a press conference that it was a “purely goodwill visit”.
Questioning Modi’s “unscheduled” visit, Congress’ senior spokesperson Anand Sharma said his engagement with Pakistan is “frivolous, unpredictable, marked by fits and starts and abrupt U-turns”.
There is diplomacy between two countries and every country indulges in that, Rajnath while addressing a “jan samvad (public interaction)” programme organised at RSS headquarters of Lucknow said and added that however, what Modi did on Friday was innovative diplomacy. In short, he is making efforts to bridge the trust deficit with Pakistan, however hard it may be.
The meeting will discuss modalities of bilateral comprehensive dialogue which was announced during the visit of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to Islamabad earlier this month.
Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf party chief Imran Khan also welcomed Modi’s trip and said it will help improve ties between the two countries.
Pakistan rejects the accusation but it has struggled to turn around perceptions in Afghanistan, where social media users sent out a stream of glowing commentary on Modi’s visit, contrasting the parliament building with the destruction wrought by Taliban suicide bombers.
“Today is a good day for Pakistan and India”, said Aitzaz Ahsan, a leader of the opposition Pakistan Peoples Party, while speaking on Geo, a private television-news network. More than 68,000 people have been killed in ongoing Kashmir violence, which began in 1989.
Kashmiri tea was also presented to the Indian premier.
Mr. Modi reportedly agreed to including all issues, including Jammu and Kashmir in the list, which had been omitted in the Ufa statement, and suggested sending the Foreign Secretaries to the meeting as well.

It was a closed holiday in Pakistan as the nation was celebrating the 139th birth anniversary of the Founder of the Nation Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
