Modi gives Sharif a birthday surprise
Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s Adviser on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz on Saturday said it would not be fair to expect much from the talks scheduled in Islamabad in January between the foreign secretaries of Pakistan and India.

A second member of Sharif’s cabinet said the same of Modi.
In fact, press reports point out that an Indian steel industry consortium has been negotiating with the Pakistan government for transporting iron ore – an agreement has already been signed with the Afghan government – from Afghanistan’s Bamiyan province to Karachi for onwards shipment to ports in India.
Agreeing with PM Modi, Sharif brothers supposedly told him – “Well stated”.
He said the meeting of foreign secretaries was also confirmed in Modi-Nawaz meeting. In recent months there have been several instances of severe cross border firing between India and Pakistan along the global border as well as along the Line of Control (LoC) which has led to civilian as well as military casualties.
Even the Pakistani media welcomed the Indian premier’s surprise visit to Lahore, with the popular news channel Geo TV saying: “The two leaders reportedly discussed a range of bilateral issues, including Kashmir”.
In his Independence Day speech, Modi had announced a new campaign “Start Up India”.
Inconsistency has marked Modi’s Pakistan policy till now.
Former chief minister Omar Abdullah called it “a good step and a very welcome development” but said India and Pakistan must maintain consistency when they deal with one another. “The two states owe it to their people to work on normalising Pakistan-India relations”.
The separatists, however, want the two countries to work towards solving the Kashmir issue, along with improving ties.
Kashmiris also saw a ray of hope in the Modi-Sharif embrace. “Aap Lahore mein ghar aa jayiye, Lahore ke darwaze bhi aap ke liye khule hain (Come to my Lahore home, the doors of Lahore are also open for you)”, the official quoted Sharif as telling the Indian PM.
“We always believed Modi was a right wing politician”. Pak got back to the Indian side promising foolproof security at the Lahore airport and assured a Pak Air Force Chopper would fly both PMs to Raiwind and back, officials said.

He said as per decision of two prime ministers, the foreign secretaries of Pakistan and India will meet in middle of January 2016 to prepare schedule for the “comprehensive dialogue”.
