The two countries were born out of British colonial India in 1947, divided into Hindu-majority India and Islamic Pakistan.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani meet in Kabul on Friday. Earlier in 1999, Mr Vajpayee had taken the New Delhi-Lahore bus to the neighbouring country, but that visit was followed by the Kargil conflict between the two nations. “PM Modi’s sudden stop over at Lahore to greet Pakiatan PM Nawaz Sharif is a much needed departure from protocol-driven politics between the two countries”. He stopped off in the Afghan capital Kabul earlier on Friday, where he inaugurated a new parliament complex built with Indian help.
“This is how this visit was suddenly planned”, he said.
Modi was on his way back from a visit to Russian Federation. He refused to share any further details. The two leaders were later shown sitting together in a room looking happy and relaxed.
This surprise visit may have left SPG men in surprise and so is the host in Pakistan. “This step gains further importance because this has taken place on the Birthday of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajapyee”, he added. “We would have welcomed it”, Anand Sharma, a Congress Party spokesman said.
After blessing the bride during the 90-minute visit to Sharif’s ancestral home at Raiwind, 40 km from here, Modi later flew to New Delhi.
“India-Pakistan diplomacy can’t be done irresponsibly”.
In worldwide relations unscheduled visits are seen as abnormal practice.

India’s foreign ministry at the time said the advisers discussed “peace and security, terrorism, Jammu and Kashmir, and other issues, including tranquility along the LoC (line of control)”, the de facto border in Kashmir. We hope that it is followed by a consistent policy of engagement to resolve the Kashmir dispute.
