Modi, who was in Russian Federation on Thursday, tweeted that he is “looking forward to meeting” Sharif in Lahore, “where I will drop by on my way back to Delhi”.
“The details of the meeting are being worked out”, he added.
Modi was received by Sharif himself at the airport.
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has commended the move, calling it ‘statesman-like’.
His first tenure as Prime Minister of Pakistan began on 6th November 1990 and ended on 18th July 1993 when he was dismissed by former president Ghulam Ishaque Khan.
Earlier, Modi had wished Sharif on his birthday.
Modi, who inaugurated a new parliament complex built with Indian help in Kabul, spoke to Sharif earlier on Friday to wish him on his 66th birthday.
Modi was in Kabul when he announced the brief visit.
“Better relations with Pakistan are in the interest of the region”.
In a joint statement, they expressed Modi’s commitment to attend a South Asian summit next year.

In a statement, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan welcomed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Pakistan, saying that the continuation of meetings between the prime ministers of both India and Pakistan would yield positive effects on bilateral relations. The National Security Advisor (NSA) level dialogue which was called off by India in August was also given a nod.
