Modi meets NSA, foreign secretary over Pathankot attack
Air Commodore C.J. Dhamoon, Air Officer Commanding of Pathankot Air Force Station, stated that that they had enhanced safety on the base instantly after receiving info from the intelligence businesses. Officials gave no other details about the situation at the base, but by late Sunday afternoon there was no word that it had been secured.

However, fresh gunfire was reported on Sunday morning.
Saturday’s Pathankot terror attack came barely days before the proposed foreign secretary-level talks in Islamabad in the middle of this month.
Indian leaders had already praised the armed forces for their heroism in Saturday’s 15-hour shootout, with Modi saying they did not let the “enemies of humanity” who attacked the base succeed. Without recovering their bodies they could not be confirmed dead. “And also that the time taken to neutralise the attackers is way too long”, he said.
A senior air force officer, Air Marshal Anil Khosla, told reporters in New Delhi that the base will not be declared fully secured until the entire area is thoroughly checked by troops.
Indian security personnel ask people to move away from the area outside the Indian Air Force base as the siege continues. At the same time, if the attack can be conclusively linked to a Pakistan-based group, the authorities here must also act decisively against such nefarious elements. Rebels in India’s portion of Kashmir have been fighting since 1989 for independence or merger with Pakistan. All of them were reportedly in touch with their handlers in Pakistan even as they took on the security forces.
Briefing Senate on the surprise visit of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Pakistan on Dec 25, the advisor said that it was not a state visit but an informal and goodwill trip, and was aimed at further developing the existing relationship between the two countries.
The Paris meet was followed by the National Security Advisers of the two countries – Ajit Doval of India and Naseer Khan Janjua of Pakistan – holding talks in Bangkok on December 6.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
The US State Department described the assault as “a heinous” terrorist attack and urged the two rivals to work together to hunt down those responsible.
At the global fora, Modi has also been pushing for India’s old initiative, the Comprehensive Convention on worldwide Terrorism, to effectively deal with terror networks. For purely domestic political reasons, there will be a ramping-up of anti-Pakistan rhetoric by some in India, and it is for the Indian government to rein in those on that side of the border who are not inclined towards peace either.
The Modi government has faced sharp criticism from Congress and some other parties over its policy on Pakistan.

But with Modi’s own diplomatic engagement with Islamabad at stake, the BJP has given no indication yet that talks have been threatened by the attack.
