President Xi made the assurance during his meeting with Prime Minister Modi in Hangzhou on Sunday.

He also condemned the terrorist bomb attack at China’s embassy in Kyrgyzstan’s capital Bishkek. “One single nation in South Asia is spreading agents of terror in our region”, Modi said, without naming Pakistan.

However, even if India keeps quiet on the issue, the USA and Japan are highly likely to bring it up, much to the embarrassment of China which has said an emphatic no to “political discussion” at the G20. He was speaking during his intervention at the last session of the G20.

“We expect the worldwide community to speak and act in unity, and to respond with urgency to fight this menace”.

As part of his day’s engagements, the Prime Minister called on Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang who expressed his support for India’s Act East Policy. “Because anything less than that is not enough”, he said.

Modi arrived in Vietnam on Friday in what is the first prime ministerial visit from India to Vietnam in 15 years.

“Noting the Award issued on 12 July 2016 of the Arbitral Tribunal constituted under the Annex VII to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of Sea (UNCLOS), both sides reiterated their support for peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation and over flight, and unimpeded commerce, based on the principles of worldwide law, as reflected notably in the UNCLOS”, read the statement. The agenda already includes pressing matters like finance, trade and counter-terrorism.

Covering another strategic area, India and Vietnam signed an agreement on cyber security.

“As a matter of principle, both countries would have to be sensitive to each other’s strategic interests”, Swarup said while touching upon broad themes that Modi stressed upon during his 35-minute bilateral with Xi, their eighth meeting. He referred to the recent launch of the HSBC Corporate Rupee Bond on the London Stock Exchange.

Modi also raised the issue of terrorism in his meeting with BRICS leaders and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on the sidelines of G20. This is expected to rise in the near future with the realization of an ASEAN-India Free Trade Agreement in services and investment. He said the people of India and China expected their leaders to take concrete steps for their progress, development and prosperity. India and Vietnam must also work for direct bilateral connectivity and ease visa regulations for business individuals. “In particular he said that the new United Kingdom regulations could have negative impact on Indian working professionals wishing to visit the United Kingdom for short term business visits” Swarup said.

Modi’s remarks on strategic interests come against the backdrop of Chinese objections to India’s aim to join the ranks of the NSG.
