Modi reaches Kabul on visit, holds talks with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Friday inaugurated the newly-built Afghan Parliament building in Kabul.

Later in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also address a joint session of the two Afghan Houses in the new Parliament building along with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. The project was started by India in 2007 as a mark of friendship and cooperation to help rebuild Afghanistan, reported PTI.

Earlier on Friday, Modi arrived at Arg, the Afghan presidential palace, and was greeted with a warm hug by the Afghan president. He is expected to hold discussions with the Afghan leadership on bilateral issues and on ways to develop the strife torn nation.

The Prime Minister is also expected to meet Afghanistan’s Chief Executive Officer Dr. Abdullah Abdullah and former president Hamid Karzai. Situated between historic landmarks King’s Palace “Darulaman” and the Queen’s Palace – the building has elements of Mughal and modern architecture and has Asia’s largest dome as its key feature. While its House of People, called Wolesi Jirga, can seat 256 members, the Upper House or Meshrano Jirga can accommodate 134 representatives.
