The US has welcomed the weekend NSA-level talks between India and Pakistan in Bangkok observing that “normalisation” of relations between the two South Asian neighbours is vital to both countries and the region.
The joint statement came after External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj met Sharif and later his Advisor on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz in Islamabad on the concluding day of her two-day visit for attending a multilateral conference on Afghanistan.
Sushma Swaraj’s is the first ministerial visit from India to Pakistan since the visit of then external affairs minister S.M. Krishna in 2012.
“Let me take this opportunity to extend our hand to Pakistan as well”.
Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has recently said that Pakistan is ready for dialogue with India without preconditions for the sustainable peace in the region thus setting the tone prior to the meeting.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today asked BJP to answer if India was “made to talk Kashmir” during the meeting between the National Security Advisors of the two countries in Bangkok as there was no mention of it when their Prime Ministers had met in Ufa. The focus would be on participating nations’ commitment to Afghanistan over energy deals, infrastructure and investment.
Ceasefire violation – Cross-border firing has claimed the lives of several Indian jawans in the past and this is one apt ocassion to take up the issue before Pakistan. “For its part, India is prepared to move our cooperation at a pace which Pakistan is comfortable with”, she said.
“We in Afghanistan’s proximity have a particular responsibility in this regard, and to end terrorism and extremism and adherence to internationally accepted red lines are essential for reconciliation and lasting peace in Afghanistan”.
