Modular Moto Z phones do it with magnets

The new Moto Z was announced at Lenovo’s Tech World conference, and will be a Verizon exclusive at launch, however other pricing and availability are still unknown. They snap to the Moto Z Force with the help of a metallic bar and a 16-pin connector, placed on the lower half of the device’s rear.

I don’t know if we’ll see a healthy ecosystem of Mods later this summer but I like the small lineup of attachments Lenovo has assembled. The teaser suggests the Moto Z’s camera capabilities that could stretch to a whopping 10x Optical Zoom! And, despite that the Moto Z Force was introduced as the “thicker” phone of the duo, it’s certainly still pretty slim – slightly thinner than the iPhone 6s, whose profile measures at 0.28 inches, even.

The first Amps expected to be available for the new Moto X include a simple colour backplate, a battery pack, a camera grip, a pico projector, a rugged cover with a wide-angle lens attachment and stereo speakers. Following the example of the Moto X, we’d expect the Moto Z Style to again be the premium power handset.

A teaser poster has surfaced (above) showing three new colours that could potentially show up in the frame of the new Moto Z range.

The Moto Z is sporting a 5.5-inch Quad HD (2560×1440 pixel) display.

Update 6 June: New images have popped up on Google+ that appear to show new cases for the Moto Z.

The modules are future-proof in the sense that they will work with upcoming Moto flagships, and Lenovo has made it clear that these are not the only Moto Mods that we will get to see.

New Moto Z Play, Moto Z Style UK price rumours: How much will the new Moto Z cost?

However, what it lacks in camera skills it potentially makes up for in battery, as the Moto Z Play supposedly has a 3500mAh juice pack, while the Moto Z Style is rumored to have a far smaller 2600mAh one.

The Moto Z Play meanwhile is thought to have a Snapdragon 625 processor and either 2GB or 3GB of RAM, which would still see it offer some reasonable power but perhaps a slower camera and app-switching. The Moto Z’s metal, water-repellent body houses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC, 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, and 32GB or 64GB of internal storage, augmentable with up to 2TB of microSD space.

The Motorola Moto Z is a single SIM (GSM) smartphone that accepts a Nano-SIM. For instance, the LG G5 is partly modular.
