Upon closer inspection of the racing form, their are several longshots in this year’s 20-thoroughbred field that could very well upend Nyquist, Exaggerator, and Mohaymen’s pursuit of the Derby crown. You may have heard this is a wide-open Kentucky Derby.

The Kentucky Derby and mint juleps go hand in hand. One of the more than a dozen horses running is 16-1 underdog Mo Tom, trained by Tom Amoss. Nyquist flew off to Florida for the Florida Derby, where he met the darling of the Eastern press, Mohaymen, in Mohaymen’s own house – and sent that one to the showers. There are eight to 10 horses in the middle range that all have an opportunity to win this race.

Those two were Animal Kingdom in 2011, following a best Beyer of 94 in the Spiral Stakes, and Mine That Bird in 2009, who could only muster a Beyer of 81 in eight starts prior to his Derby shocker at odds of 50-1.
Junior Alvarado, the jockey in all six previous races, will again ride Mohaymen.
Last year McLaughlin was high on another gray colt, Frosted, who closed well for fourth in the Derby but was too far behind a moderate pace to catch American Pharoah. The 1993 Derby is the only one since 1991 where every runner had won as a juvenile, and in that time, there have been 70 Derby runners without a juvenile win on their resume. I can now say with confidence that there are few moments in sports more peaceful and flawless than standing near the track as the sun is rising over the twin spires and the Derby and Oaks horses make their way out to practice. “Had we had an extra 100 or 200 yards we would have won – we get that extra distance in the Kentucky Derby”. “I know just how much ground he covered in his last two races and how inefficiently he ran”.
