Mom of ‘Affluenza’ Teen Arrives in US After Being Deported From Mexico
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) Lawyers for a Texas teen who cited “affluenza” as a defense in a deadly drunken-driving wreck may be attempting to stall his deportation to the United States by claiming that Mexican authorities violated his human rights, according to legal experts.

In the meantime, Ethan Couch is being held at the Agujas immigration detention center, where the official said he will have no special privileges such as the ones high profile criminals can sometimes buy in Mexican prisons.
But his mother was deported and flown to Los Angeles, where she was escorted through the city’s sprawling LAX airport in handcuffs by USA marshals early Thursday morning. Her son is being held in Mexico City.
“He’ll be there until his appeal is over, which will ultimately end in deportation”, the migration official said, adding that Couch would not be allowed out of the facility.
Following release of photos of her arrival in the USA, many social media users began to compare Tonya Couch’s likeness to a comedian known for his bright red, curly hair.
Ethan Couch, 18, typically stayed inside his room at Los Tules, a resort in Puerto Vallarta, but one night, he chose to hit a gentleman’s club.
“We believe that, until the Mexican Federal Judge enters an appropriate order authorizing it, Ethan will not be returned to the United States”, they said. A judge sentenced him in juvenile court to 10 years’ probation and a stint in a rehabilitation centre.
Tonya Couch has been charged with hindering the apprehension of a fugitive, a third-degree felony punishable by 2-10 years in state prison.
Prosecutors had asked that Couch be sentenced to 20 years in a state juvenile lockup.
Earlier Wednesday at a news conference in Houston, Richard Hunter, chief deputy for the U.S. Marshals Service in South Texas, said that the three-day court injunction granted to Ethan Couch will likely take at least two weeks to resolve.
It was unclear why she was brought to Los Angeles and where she would be taken next.
Violating his probation by fleeing to Mexico may earn Couch a maximum of 120 days in jail, said Tarrant County District Attorney Sharen Wilson.
During the sentencing phase of Ethan Couch’s trial, a defense expert argued that his wealthy parents coddled him into a sense of irresponsibility – a condition the expert termed “affluenza”. Ethan Couch failed to report to his probation officer on December 10. The condition is not recognized as a medical diagnosis by the American Psychiatric Association, and the term drew widespread ridicule when it was employed.
Mexican police said Couch and his mother spent three days in a rented property at a resort development in Puerto Vallarta before finding an apartment. If found to be drinking, Couch could see his probation revoked and face up to four months in jail.
“I think it’s particularly satisfying to families that, indeed, it appears that his mother, Tonya, may have committed a crime and may finally be held accountable as well”, he said.
A probation violation hearing is set for January 19.
