The woman suddenly heard the high-pitched screams of her young son. She could have called the police. Clearly this mom’s love for her son propelled her to act quickly and bravely.

News reported the child suffered injuries to his face, head and neck in the attack.

The mother and son were brought to the Aspen Valley Hospital for immediate medical attention. CNN reported that after initial treatment in Aspen, the boy was transferred to Children’s Hospital in Denver.

From there, the child was flown to Children’s Hospital in Denver in fair condition.

The mother suffered bite marks on her hand and scratches on her leg, authorities said.

The mother’s quick thinking in prising the cat’s mouth open, grabbing the child and running to safety saved the boy’s life.

“She’s a hero”, he added.

Sheriff’s deputies and a law enforcement officer from the US Forest Service found the mountain lion in the front yard of the residence and put it down, the sheriff said.

Just hours after the attack on the little boy officials killed two mountain lions in the area and the animals are now being examined to ascertain if they were diseased or undernourished.

The boy was playing outside when the mountain lion attacked. While mountain lion populations are healthy across California, the situation is becoming increasingly dire for the isolated population in the Santa Monica Mountains.

“The boy was completely under the cat”, Buglione told the newspaper.

As you may well know, mountain lions are fascinating creatures, but being on the receiving end of their attack is surely terrifying.

Some expressed concern for the well-being of wild animals, suggesting that many attacks are a result of their habitat being destroyed. “Lions have been known to be driven away by prey that fights back”.
