Mom’s Powerball celebration turns to embarrassment after ‘winning ticket

A Tennessee couple came forward on Friday with what they said was one of the three winning tickets for this week’s record $1.6 billion U.S. Powerball lottery jackpot, appearing with their lawyer on NBC’s “Today” program.

A $2 million prize was purchased at a Simonson Station Store, while a $1 million prize was claimed at Horizon Resource Cenex last January.

But they shouldn’t wait too long: California gives its top winners up to a year to contact lottery officials before the money automatically goes to schools.

Where did these tickets come from?

Wednesday’s drawing included a $2 million prize that was purchased at the Casey’s General Store in Onawa, Iowa.

The ticket – one of three winning tickets that will share in the $1.6 billion jackpot – was sold at a Publix grocery store in coastal Florida. The Multiplier number was 02.

Since no one matched Tuesday’s winning Mega Millions numbers of 15, 27, 29, 31 and 48 with the Mega Ball of 15, the jackpot for tonight’s drawing has jumped to $22 million.

Three $50,000 tickets were sold in Davenport at the Locust St. Kwik Mart, also Cedar Rapids and Polk City.

The next POWERBALL drawing will be held Saturday, January 16, at 10:59 p.m. ET with an estimated $40 million jackpot.

The news prompted some customers to check out old lottery tickets.

$50,000 tickets – Shoprite #500, 3373 Brunswick Pike, Lawrenceville. At the peak, 37,000 tickets were being sold per minute, Lopez said.

$100,000 ticket – Fischer Bay Exxon, 826 Fischer Blvd., Toms River.

Kathryn went to work as usual on Thursday and said she was going to throw out her ticket because she had heard no one in Maryland won the big $1.6 billion jackpot. Atwal will split $1 million with 7-Eleven.

Crowds descended on the store after word emerged where the winning ticket had been bought, to snap pictures and congratulate the clerk.
