The Harris County District Attorney’s Office said Tuesday that Sheborah Thomas has been charged with two counts of capital murder under 10 years of age for the deaths of her 5-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son.
The owners of a Southeast Houston restaurant say Thomas showed up Saturday acting odd and desperate for her final paycheck of $47. The boy, she allegedly told detectives, struggled, but then stopped moving.
But according to the Chronicle report, as well as other media reports out of Houston, when she repeated the bloodcurdling claim – and even indicated where she had hidden the two little bodies – the horrified friend took action.
When the girl finally went limp, the mom placed her body on a bed, then called in 7-year-old “Ray Ray” for a bath.
“All of this is out of her character”, said former neighbor Emily Payton, who also attended the vigil.
Thomas was not in court for the reading of the affidavit.
In an interview with the station, Wesley said Sheborah Thomas was trying to pick up a check for $47. Autopsies have been ordered.
Police returned to the scene and located the bodies of the victims, 7-year-old Oraynn and 5-year-old Kayana, under a neighbor’s home.
Apparently Thomas attempted to bury the children herself, but ended up hiding their bodies under a neighbor’s house.
The person asked where her kids were, and the mom allegedly confessed to killing the kids on Friday.
She was so matter-of-fact about it, he didn’t think she was serious.
Wesley said Thomas, 30, walked away from the job a few weeks ago after staff confronted her about increasingly weird behavior.
Wesley said that he had fired Thomas after she complained to him that she was putting in too many hours and that she did not have enough time to spend with her children. Police have been called to the house before, but not for anything major.
Records showed that the children were placed in the custody of their grandmother in 2012 after Kayiana was found wandering the street with a drunk man. As they were driving away, he said he asked her again where her children were, and she said beside the house.
Texas Department of Family and Protective Services spokeswoman Tejal Patel said a “top to bottom review” of the family will be conducted.
Dozens of people gathered for a candlelight vigil Tuesday night in the Third Ward as everyone here tries to make sense of a horrific crime.
“She was sweating, she was kind of angry that she didn’t have any money”, said Wesley.

Police say the woman also has a 12-year-old son, but he was not home at the time.
