Monaco’s Wembley win goes according to plan

Part of Tottenham’s home stadium is now undergoing construction work, with a section being demolished to make room for a new stadium opening in 2018 adjacent to White Hart Lane.

Monaco manager Leonardo Jardim admitted he used his team’s 2-1 win at the Emirates in last season’s Champions League in preparation for their latest match in London.

Wednesday’s attendance of 85,011 people at Wembley Stadium, Spurs’ home for European fixtures this season, is the largest ever for an England club’s home game.

The ESPN FC crew evaluate how playing at Wembley Stadium may have been a factor in Tottenham’s loss to Monaco.

When Spurs played in the 2010-11 Champions League their home form was key to their run to the quarter-finals.

“A lot of us have played there already, so it feels like even more of a home”.

“You don’t really want opponents looking forward to coming to your ground, but that will be the case when Monaco, CSKA Moscow and Bayer Leverkusen come to London”.

White Hart Lane has a small pitch in the Premier League and while Pochettino has been outspoken about its size, it hasn’t exactly hindered his team.

Mauricio Pochettino admits Tottenham Hotspur produced too many errors against AS Monaco on Wednesday night. We just need to make sure we keep improving and win the next game.

Pochettino added about the Wembley pitch, “You have more space to play, it’s more hard for the opponent to press you when there are more meters to run”. We’re excited to play there because of all the history that comes with it. “We did enough to win the game but we didn’t take our chances”. Everyone knows how iconic Wembley is, but that’s what we’ve got to be careful of. “We need to be more aggressive in front of goal”.

The Gunners fared slightly better in their first match of the tournament, snatching a draw with a less than convincing performance versus Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night.

Pochettino said afterwards: “I was speaking with my players at half-time”. I think the season is long.
