Monday on the Street: Democratic and Republican National Conventions

After a week at the Republican National Convention that could easily be described as “chaotic”, all the Democratic National Convention had to do was be coherent. “Or as it’s commonly known, a horrifying look at Satan’s Pinterest board 2016”, he said. But one of the biggest controversies persisted even after the convention ended. His takedown of the fact-aversion of the RNC was thorough and spot-on, and Oliver likewise didn’t trivialize the rocky beginning of the DNC, which happened right after Julian Assange’s (strategically timed) release of those emails revealing an incriminating bias against Bernie Sanders, and which saw Debbie Wasserman Schultz stepping down as the Chairperson of the Democratic National Committee. “I did not know that was technically possible”, Oliver said in awe. First lady Michelle Obama gave a moving speech about the country’s foundations, but Oliver criticized audience members for clapping when she said that the White House was built by slaves.

“On Wednesday, Joe Biden spoke, assuming the role of America’s motivational cattle prod”, said Oliver.

Oliver gets fired up to the MAX when discussing Donald Trump’s criticisms of a DNC speech made by Khizr Khan, the Muslim father of a United States soldier killed in the Iraq war. In the aforementioned interview, Stephanopoulos asked Trump to reply to Khan’s question of what sacrifices he’s made – to which Trump discussed creating jobs… through his many private (often outsourced) corporate endeavors. Trump’s reaction to the speech sparked outrage when he chose to focus on the fact that Khan’s wife did not speak.

“The DNC had a lot of stars there, and it was focused more on who was there and who was supporting”.

“Wow”, Oliver said, aghast. Taped in NY a few hours before it debuts on HBO, the show features a mix of Oliver’s topical commentary, pre-taped pieces and occasional guests.
