Of the $570 million, Fox said Montana will receive $2 million. Volkswagen will pay $15.3 billion for selling and leasing vehicles equipped with technology created to cheat emissions systems tests.
“Volkswagen should voluntarily pay European auto owners compensation that is comparable with that which they will pay USA consumers”, said Bienkowska to Die Welt.
Wasden joined a coalition of states in 2015 to investigate claims the company violated state consumer protection laws.
“There is no compensation for European customers”, VW Australia managing director Michael Bartsch said in a statement last week.
Although the diesel emissions fraud involved “defeat devices” installed in both 2.0 liter and 3.0 liter engine cars and SUVs, the current settlement covers only vehicles with the 2.0 liter engines. The company also tried to hide the existence of the device from regulators and the public, Wasden said. Vehicles have to meet certain standards in terms of how much emissions come out the tailpipe.
In the wake of the historic (in more ways than one) settlement with USA authorities, Volkswagen has launched an information page for US diesel owners and lessees that presents options of a. Volkswagen misled consumers by marketing the vehicles as environmentally friendly and misrepresented the cars as complying with federal and state emissions standards, despite knowing that they emitted far more oxides of nitrogen (NOx) than the legal limit.
Volkswagen has regularly said owners of cars with diesel motor that cheat emissions tests are not entitled to payment since Australia has different regulations to the United States, where 470,000 owners recently were granted about $5,000 each. Owners who choose the modification option would also receive an Extended Emission Warranty as well as a Lemon Law-type remedy to protect against future problems with the modification. Owners will still be eligible to choose a buyback in the event regulators do not approve a fix.

We must also note that other European Union states still have the possibility to fine Volkswagen AG for its actions, as Germany is not the only country to make decisions in the EU.
