Montoya joins Valencia from Barca

The Catalan giants have already allowed Dani Alves (Juventus), Sandro Ramirez (Malaga) and Alex Song (Rubin Kazan) to leave on free deals, and now Martin Montoya has joined that list.

A Barca statement added: “Barcelona and the player Martin Montoya have reached an agreement for the rescission of the contract between the two parties”.

The 25-year-old was later seen at the arrivals section of Barcelona El Prat airport where he spoke to the media.

“Montoya came up through Barcelona’s La Masia academy and debuted for the first team against Mallorca at the Iberostar Stadium”.

It was announced on Monday that the Catalan club and the Spanish full-back chose to “cancel” their contract, which essentially means Montoya has been released by the club in a friendly way. During his time at Barcelona he won three La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey’s, a Supercopa de Espana and a Champions League. However, Montoya again struggled to make the impact expected in Serie A and in January was recalled by Barcelona before being dispatched to Real Betis for the second half of the season.

Last week, Barcelona sporting director Robert Fernandez had said both Montoya and Cristian Tello could join Valencia, but that there would be no connection to the deal that brought Andre Gomes to the Camp Nou.
