Monty Williams returns to Spurs as VP of basketball ops

Monty Williams is the new vice president of basketball operations for the San Antonio Spurs, returning to the franchise he has already been part of as both a player and a coaching intern.

After a nine-year National Basketball Association playing career, including two-plus seasons with the Spurs, Williams got his start in the front office and coaching while serving as a coaching intern with the Silver and Black during the 2004-05 campaign. His wife, Ingrid, died in February from injuries sustained in a auto crash in Oklahoma City. Ingrid Williams was the mother of five children.

Williams left the Thunder last season after his wife was killed in an auto crash near downtown Oklahoma City.

Susannah Donaldson, 55, the driver of the other auto, also died in the accident.

Wright, meanwhile, joins the Spurs after serving the past two seasons as general manager of the Pistons.

The Spurs announced a bevy of staff changes, additions and promotions Friday. Hardy worked the past six seasons with the Spurs, including the last three as the club’s video coordinator and has spent the last two summers as head coach for San Antonio’s summer league team in Utah. Brandon James has been elevated to assistant general counsel/director of basketball administration and Dave Telep has been promoted to director of scouting. Xavi Schelling has been named the team’s director of sports science and athletic performance with Niraj Mulji has been elevated to basketball operations manager.
