Mookie Betts’ 3 homers power Red Sox

Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts has three home runs through seven innings of Boston’s game at Baltimore.

I hope everyone has enjoyed this excursion down memory lane and I leave all with one interesting factoid; in two of the last three championship years, 2004, and 2013, the Red Sox have had a player erupt for three home runs in a single game.

Boston Red Sox’s Marco Hernandez gestures as he rounds the bases after hitting a three-run home run in the eighth inning of a baseball game against the Baltimore Orioles in Baltimore, Monday.

Rockies: Shortstop Jose Reyes will report to Triple-A Albuquerque for a rehab assignment on Wednesday, the day after the former All-Star shortstop completes his suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s new domestic violence policy. Again, his command has been paramount to his success this year and his strategic placement of pitches has allowed him to survive the occasional mistakes. Boston basically got away with one there, but if the rules don’t allow for a review there’s not much that can be done. He hit.416 in May (47-for-113) with seven homers and 23 RBIs, tying the franchise record for hits in a month, shared by Al Oliver (August 1982) and Marquis Grissom (June 1994) of the Montreal Expos. The back-to-back blasts gave the Red Sox an instant lead that – as it turned out – they never relinquished. He accounted for five of Boston’s six runs and extended his hitting streak to four games.

Betts and Dustin Pedroia hit back-to-back homers to start the game against Kevin Gausman (0-3).

Betts is up to 12 homers for the season and a ridiculous 40 RBIs out of the leadoff spot.

Red Sox: Eduardo Rodriguez (right knee) comes off the disabled list to make his season debut, starting on the mound Tuesday night against the organization that drafted him. One-third down, two-thirds to go.

Save for that Bradley home run pitch, Wilson was pretty good yesterday. The first couple of at-bats, you’re not really putting pressure on yourself, but as the game goes on you know your time is running out so you try and focus a little bit more, try and put up a good at-bat and see what happens.

Betts’ prolific and historic exhibition of power provided the impetus for a stroll down memory lane, as my curiosity was piqued with respect to those members of the Red Sox’s “Trifecta” club that Betts would be joining. The LSU product was ripped for three home runs – matching his total from the first six starts – and charged with four runs on five hits and one walk.

In the fifth, Baltimore got to within 5-2 when Jones singled home Paul Janish with two outs.

Currently, Wright ranks ninth in the American League in WAR for pitchers at 1.8 and he’s fifth for innings pitched, tossing 69.7 through 10 starts.
