More airbag woes: Continental recalls control units in 5 million cars

Yet another recall over airbags issues, as the unit of Germany-based Continental AG told the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that certain airbag control units (ABCU) manufactured between January 1, 2006, and December 31, 2010 might have a power supply component that may corrode, leading to a failure of the electronic system.

Honda will install new inflators in the affected pickups for free, but the automaker says parts won’t be available until summer because of the number of vehicles involved. “Additionally, in some vehicles, the air bags may inadvertently deploy, increasing the risk of a crash”, said NHTSA.

We don’t know yet how many units are affected in North America.

Honda Motor Co. said Friday that it would recall 5.7 million cars worldwide in the latest round of recalls involving Takata Corp. air bag inflators that can explode and hurl shrapnel into the vehicle.

Fiat Chrysler said that 112,000 of its vehicles in the United States are covered by the recall, ranging from the 2009 Dodge Journey, 2008-2009 Dodge Grand Caravan, Chrysler Town and Country and the 2009 Volkswagen Routan, which it assembled for Volkswagen.

Meanwhile, an analyst thinks that the Continental air bag recall can’t be compared to the Takata air bag recall, mainly because fewer vehicles are impacted by Continental’s recall. Per federal law, individual automakers will conduct the recall campaigns.

Fiat has received reports of as many as 25 inadvertent airbag deployments, while Honda claims to have received 83 field reports and two confirmed injuries related to the problem. But it said it will be summer before it has the replacement airbags it needs to make the swap.
