The department announced Wednesday that the two types of mosquitoes that transmit Zika are not likely to make it as far north as Wisconsin.
The Zika outbreak centered in Miami is the first time the virus has been spread via infected mosquitoes within the continental U.S.
FDOH has conducted testing for the Zika virus for more than 2,649 people statewide. It’s the height of mosquito season, and cities like New Orleans, with hot, muggy conditions, are particularly vulnerable.
Florida health officials have identified four new local cases of the Zika virus in Miami.
Texas has confirmed that an infant who recently died in Harris County had microcephaly linked to the Zika virus. All Texas cases are related to travel overseas to areas with active Zika transmission. Roughly one in five people infected with Zika experience symptoms.
It’s feared that the impact of the Zika virus in Florida is even being felt in local real estate markets, affecting home values in some parts of the state.
The Florida cases have led to an increase in calls from ob/gyns in Georgia and others interested in getting more information, she said. “While this is a travel-associated case, we know that prevention is key to reducing the risk of Zika virus infection”, Shah said in a press release.
After traveling to countries having active Zika transmissions, all three residents became ill and experienced mild symptoms, according to county officials, and all fully recovered after receiving treatments. Partners of pregnant women are advised to use a condom to guard against sexual transmission during pregnancy.
