More evacuations in South Carolina

Lottt said people who had previously evacuated the area can now return to their homes.

Crews worked overnight to stabilize Beaver Dam in Northeast Richland County Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

The area most affected by floodwaters is the Forest Acres area of Columbia.

Richland County was under a curfew from midnight Tuesday until 6 a.m. Wednesday.

As of an update Wednesday morning Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said officials are still assessing the situation and the South Carolina Emergency Management Division is keeping an on eye in the dam’s stability.

The school says it’s following closing determinations set by Richland County, where government offices are also reopening Wednesday. Schools in the area have also canceled classes through Friday. As of the latest writing, there were 301 road closures and 166 bridge closures in South Carolina – majority in the Midlands region of the state.

Tuesday crews were working to dam the Columbia canal in order to create a reservoir of water that can be pumped back to the water treatment plant and distributed to residents.

Residents of Columbia in need of bottled water are being urged to visit one of these seven locations … “It doesn’t mean it’s happening now, but when the dam breaks it’s going to flood”.
