More reports have surfaced that Apple is planning to do away with the 3.5 mm headphone jack in the next-generation of the iPhone handset, tentatively dubbed the “iPhone 7”.

Multiple supply chain reports today are corroborating an earlier rumor that the Apple iPhone 7 will not have a headphone jack.

The iPhone 7 is believed to come with improved 256GB storage and a larger battery. Apple did something similar with the Apple Watch: the smartwatch can store music and play via Bluetooth headphones, but lacks a 3.5mm jack.

If you thought Apple’s transition from the 30-pin connector to the Lightning port was controversial, just wait until Apple trots out the iPhone 7.

Apple introduced the Lightning port on its iPhones with the iPhone 5 in 2012.

The logic is that by removing the jack, Apple can make the iPhone even thinner, as right now its existence puts a limit on the minimum thickness of the device.

Lightning-connected earphones are already available from third-party manufacturers such as Philips’ Fidelio but Apple could be looking to monopolise the market.

However, the Feng source states that Apple expects customers to move towards wireless.

On thing that has also been rumored for their new iPhone handsets is that the devices will be waterproof, this is something that has been rumored for a while.
