The father of Omar Mateen, the American of Afghan heritage who allegedly carried out the mass shooting early Sunday in an Orlando gay bar, referenced the border dispute in a Facebook posting early Monday in which he spoke of his son as a “nice” man.
An Afghan border policeman was killed in the clash on Sunday and six of his colleagues were wounded, officials in Kabul said.
Pakistan was building a fence, roughly 30 meters into their own territory as far as they are concerned, as part of the border crossing.
The army said Pakistani security forces responded to the Afghan firing effectively.
Afghan security forces carry the coffin of an Afghan soldier, who was killed last night during gun fighting between Afghan border forces and Pakistani forces in Torkham, during his funeral in Nangarhar province, Afghanistan province, on Tuesday.
The Torkham highway serves as the main trade route from Pakistan to Afghanistan and Central Asian states, and has also been the major supply line for USA -led coalition forces in Afghanistan. Kabul alleges Pakistan is harbouring militants seeking to overthrow the Afghan government, including the Haqqani Network and the leadership of the Afghan Taleban.
Pakistan army retaliated with heavy fire and destroyed a military checkpost inside Afghan area.
Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have been strained for months.
He said Pakistan has seen incursions by militants from across the Torkham border lately, which prompted authorities to implement more effective border control.
“Perhaps Pakistan has realized that the quality of its relationship with Afghanistan is more important than the notion of “strategic depth”, the analyst said. Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan also held a press conference in which he said that it seems likely that Afghanistan is playing into some other country’s hands. Three soldiers from the Pakistani side were wounded.
