Beginning Friday, a torrent of about 2 feet of rain inundated the southern part of the state over a 48-hour period, and days later many homes and businesses were still underwater.
FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate visited the area Tuesday, where he and Edwards announced that eight parishes – Acadia, Ascension, East Feliciana, Iberia, Lafayette, Pointe Coupee, St. Landry and Vermilion – had been added to the federal disaster declaration. Communities included in the warning as already experiencing or expected to experience flooding are Baton Rouge, Zachary, Baker, Denham Springs, Gonzales, Donaldsonville, Plaquemine, Port Allen, New Roads, Krotz Springs, Melville, Oak Hills Place, far northern portions of Reserve, far northern portions of LaPlace, St. Gabriel, Walker, Gramercy, Addis, Lutcher and Brusly.
