More than 100 killed in India floods

Wind and rain from Cyclone Komen added to damage to India in recent days with almost four million people in 10,000 villages being affected by the floods in the worst-affected Indian state of West Bengal, the home ministry said.

The state government has also distributed drinking water bottles in the affected areas.

“We had evacuated about 2,000 people during the floods last week but all of them returned to their homes”.

The government has issued an appeal to all the affected in the districts to move to their nearest relief camp before the situation worsens. Authorities in Myanmar said the death toll in the country has climbed to 46, with many villagers in remote areas forced to use makeshift shelters.

Landslides in Chin state – south of Sagaing – have destroyed 700 homes in the state capital Hakha, reported by the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar.

Poor infrastructure and limited search and rescue capabilities routinely hamper relief efforts across the region, with roads, phone lines and electricity often knocked out by rising waters.

“If there are no rains, the water level will come down in the next few days”, he added.

In neighboring Pakistan, the number of casualties from three weeks of flooding has already exceeded 100, and authorities fear the number could rise ever further in the coming days. As mentioned by Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority, 116 people have so far lost their lives due to floods in different parts of the country.
