But Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters Monday that Carter was “being too modest”.

The letters read “Overthrow Kim Jong Un and Discard North Korea’s nuclear”.

Spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters Monday that the conflict between the USA and North Korea was the essence of the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue. The U.N. Security Council held an emergency meeting. on the matter.

South Korea in July announced plans to deploy THAAD, a sophisticated U.S. missile defence system, to counter growing nuclear and missile threats from the North.

North Korea’s announcement that it successfully conducted a “higher level” test of a nuclear weapon drew immediate condemnation from the United States, South Korea, China and Japan. Chinese leaders fear that instability in Pyongyang could precipitate a flood of refugees into northeastern China and push a USA -friendly unified Korea right up to China’s doorstep.

The statement said the test was: “Therefore a clear threat to global peace and security continues to exist”.

People in the north eastern region near the border with China and Russian Federation were suffering “great hardship”, according to North Korean state media.

Conservative South Korean activists incensed by North Korea’s fifth nuclear test are calling for the placement of tactical nuclear weapons in the country. “A lot of North Korean military commanders find US bombers especially threatening, given the destruction here in Pyongyang during the Korean War, when much of the city was flattened”, Ripley said.

North Korean state officials have also bragged about their newfound ability to equip ballistic rockets with nuclear warheads, though it is not clear if those claims have been verified.

The Korean Peninsula remains technically at war, as the 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty. South Korean activists are calling for nuclear weapons to be reintroduced to the country as a deterrence measure.

The United States and its allies are seeking stronger UN sanctions against the North.

Even so, and despite last Friday’s new test, Beijing is unlikely “to opt for significantly greater pressure on the DPRK”, said Bonnie Glaser, senior adviser for Asia at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

As the missile defense system is a means of self-defense, Park stressed THAAD is not subject to the National Assembly’s ratification and nor would it violate security interests of a third country, referring to China’s opposition.
